The Fire Safety Act 2021

The government has announced the commencement of the Fire Safety Act 2021 from 16 May 2022 in England and Wales. The Act clarifies which parts of residential buildings apply under the  Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO), and who is responsible for maintaining fire safety for these areas.

The new Fire Safety Act 2021 amendment affects buildings containing more than one home, and clarifies that the FSO applies to the structure and external walls, and all doors between the domestic and common parts of the property, which windows, balconies, cladding, insulation and fixings and any common parts, as well as all doors between homes and common areas.

The Historical Origins of Easter, Bunnies and Easter Eggs

All of sudden Easter weekend is upon us. Retailers have been selling a certain fondant filled egg since January, hot cross buns and Easter eggs seem to be everywhere.

However, this Christian festival is not purely linked to chocolate. Easter is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus who, according to the New Testament, died on the cross on Good Friday but rose again on Easter Sunday, which also marks the end of Lent's 40-day period of fasting. There is an emphasis given to eggs and why they are so significant at Easter – they are an illustration of new life, they are said to symbolise the empty womb when they are cracked open.  Eggs were coloured in different colours, but green was a symbol of re-growth after winter, whereas red recognised the sacrifice Jesus made when he was crucified.

Report on the PRS published by Public Accounts Committee

The recent report published by the Public Accounts Committee reports that despite record rent increases 13% of rented homes “pose serious threat to the health and safety of renters” - costing the NHS an estimated £340 million a year

In a report today the Public Accounts Committee says it is “too difficult for renters to realise their legal right to a safe and secure home” and that local authorities - constrained by a lack of support from the Department for Levelling Up,

Housing and Communities (DLUHC) and its approach to licensing landlords - do not have the capacity and capability to provide "appropriate and consistent protection for private renters”. According to the report, the private rented sector in England has doubled in size in the last 20 years and now houses 11 million people.
