The Renters Rights Bill enters Committee Stage
Today, 22nd October 2024, the Renters Rights Bill entered Committee Stage. This will mean that the Bill will undergo what is known as ‘Legislative Scrutiny’.
The Committee is made up of 17 MPs.
Gathering Evidence: The MPs in question will begin the process of gathering evidence.
Examination of the Bill: The Bill will go through detailed examination. This is common for complex or significant legislation. The committee scrutinises the bill's provisions in depth, considering both the broader implications and the finer details.

Evidence is provided from a wide range of sources, which includes taking testimonies from experts, stakeholders, and the public.

Report Stage: After examining the Bill and gathering evidence, the Select Committee prepares a report. This report will include their findings, recommendations for change, and sometimes a detailed analysis of the Bill’s potential impacts. The committee’s recommendations can lead to amendments to the Bill.
The report from the Committee will be presented to Parliament.
Table of Amendments: Members of Parliament (MPs) or Lords, influenced by the Select Committee's report, can table amendments to the Bill during the last stages of its passage through Parliament—typically at the Committee Stage or Report Stage.
These are the stages where the details of the bill are debated and where changes to the legislation are formally made.
Adoption of Amendments: The proposed amendments are debated and must be approved by a vote in the chamber. If approved, these changes are incorporated into the final text of the bill.
Amendments will start appearing next week and the Committee Stage will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the whole of November.
