Government suspension on Housing Possessions extended by 2 months
Millions of renters across England and Wales will receive greater protection after the government extended the suspension of new evictions until 23 August.
The extension announced by the Housing Secretary yesterday takes the moratorium on evictions to a total of five months to ensure that renters continue to have certainty and security.
Ministers are also working with the judiciary, legal representatives and the advice sector on arrangements, including new rules, which will mean that courts are better able to address the need for appropriate protection of all parties, including those shielding from coronavirus. This is to ensure that judges have all the information necessary to make just decisions and that the most vulnerable tenants can get the help they need.
The Renter’s Reform Bill - An Overview
The Queen’s Speech last month confirmed some quite significant plans to further change the housing sector. These reforms affecting England, were announced on the 19th December, further cementing the Government’s intention to herald a new style housing sector.
The key elements of the Bill aim to restore a balance and fairness between landlords and tenants.
Tenant Fees Act Guidance Issued
On the 12th February 2019 the Ministry of Housing announced the date that the Tenant Fees Act 2019 would become law on the 1st June 2019. Housing Minister Tightens up Rules on Electrical Safety to better protect Renters
Renters will receive better protection thanks to new measures designed to ensure mandatory electrical inspections are carried out by competent and qualified inspectors, Housing Minister Heather Wheeler MP has announced yesterday. As part of the government’s commitment to drive up standards in the private rented sector, landlords will be legally required to ensure that the inspectors they hire to carry out safety inspections have the necessary competence and qualifications to do so – with tough financial penalties for those who fail to comply.
