Post - Election Protocol

After a general election a new Parliament meets and a new parliamentary session begins. Members of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords are required to take an oath of allegiance to the Crown before they take their seats in Parliament.

The State Opening will take place on Wednesday 17th July following the election of the Speaker of the Commons and the swearing-in of Members of both Houses.

The State Opening of Parliament marks the formal start of the parliamentary year. The King's Speech will set out the government's proposed policies and legislation for the coming session. After the State Opening members of both Houses debate the content of the King's Speech. Each House continues to debate the planned legislative programme for several days, looking at different subject areas, which will most definitely include Housing.

After these days of general debates, the programme of work to turn what is outlined in the Monarch’s Speech into legislation begins. Bills start to be introduced in both Houses as Parliament gets back to business.

With the dissolution of Parliament that took place on Thursday 30 May 2024, all business in the House of Commons and House of Lords came to an end and the Renters Reform Bill did not make it over the line. So, a key topic of interest will be whether a version of the Renters Reform Bill will appear on the agenda, possibly including the Regulation of Property Agents (ROPA).
