Preparing for University - Student Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Now that the A Level results have been released, students will be planning for the next phase of their academic lives. Whilst none of us know what the next few months will bring, universities and academic institutions will be set on creating a safe, clean and vibrant place to live by ensuring that ‘COVID-secure’ measures  are in place.

Before moving to university it is important to ensure that the Government guidelines issued by Public Health England, the NHS and Foreign & Commonwealth Office and check the protocols put in place by the university.

How can you protect yourself from COVID-19?

The most effective method of protecting yourself and others is to social distance. Also ensure that you have very strict cleaning and hygiene protocols in place - wash your hands regularly and keep surfaces clean.

Personal waste, for example, tissues and face coverings (disposable masks) should be placed securely within disposable rubbish bags. These bags must be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste. This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual property waste bin. Other household waste can be disposed of as normal.

Abide by the Moving in Protocols

The university will advise on how many people from your household can attend the day of move in with you. Hand washing protocol and social distancing will be in place to protect everyone.

The UK Government advises that everyone wears a face covering in places where it's hard to stay away from other people. The people you will be sharing with will become your household bubble, therefore, it is important to check the house / accommodation rules. Masks and hand sanitiser should be something that you have packed with you.

What steps should be taken by International Students

Admissions may be very different and vary from institution to institution this year, international students are still applying to universities. Universities UK addresses queries about the way the Covid-19 outbreak is affecting the international work of UK universities, their international students, staff and partners and international students looking to study in the UK in the near future. Home Office (UKVI) has published on its website, including contact details for its Coronavirus Immigration Help Centre.

Are visitors permitted?

Attending or holding any gatherings of more than two people whilst maintaining social distancing are not permitted. The university will provide further guidance. Groups of up to six people may now gather outside but whilst also maintaining at least two-metres distance from each other. The latest Government advice about meeting people from outside your household and in particular, areas experiencing additional lockdown measures is available on-line. Key points of the Prime Minister’s announcement on 13th August 2020 are that:-

  • Fines will double to a maximum of £3,200 for those who repeatedly flout face covering rules

  • New fines to be introduced for people hosting raves or other unlawful gatherings of more than 30 people

This is an unprecedented situation for all involved it is therefore extremely important that students understand the seriousness of the protocols which the universities, colleges and other academic institutions have put in place. Staying safe is paramount.
